Ability of new durum wheat pure lines to meet yield stability and quality requirements in low input and organic systems Organic Eprints
Colomb, B.; Desclaux, D.; Debaeke, P.; Justes, E.; Burger, P..
Low-input production schemes adopted in organic or conventional farms require crop varieties that combine good product quality and high yield stability under non optimal environmental conditions (Gooding et al., 1999). These traits are not yet found among the durum wheat genotypes available in France. Consequently the cultivation of this crop is hardly successful in stockless organic farms in southern France, which are characterised by very low nitrogen resources. Some hopes emerged with the identification of new durum wheat pure lines with a high grain protein content in breeding experiments conducted near Montpellier in 2001 and 2002. The aim of the present work was to confirm and elucidate the origin of the enhanced protein performance of these new...

ABOVEGROUND WOODY BIOMASS PRODUCTION OF DIFFERENT TREE SPECIES IN SILVOARABLE AGROFORESTRY SYTEMS WITH ORGANIC AND INTEGRATED CULTIVATION IN SOUTHERN GERMANY Organic Eprints
Huber, Julia; Siegel, Thomas; Schmid, Harald; Hülsbergen, Kurt-Jürgen.
The increasing demand for bioenergy and the combination of agricultural production with conservation has made agroforestry to a sustainable land-management option. Aboveground woody biomass plays a decisive role considering the economic value of the agroforestry systems as well as the carbon storage. With the objective to study aboveground woody biomass production of agroforestry systems with different cultivation methods (organic/ integrated), short rotation plantations of different tree species were established 2009 and coppiced in 2012. The studied tree species were black alder (Alnus glutinosa), black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), poplar “Max 3”, (Populus maximowiczii x Populus nigra) and willow “Inger” (Salix triandra x Salix viminalis). At the end...

Tamm, L.; Smit, B.; Hospers, M.; Jannsens, B.; Burma, J.; Mølgaard, J.P.; Lærke, P.E.; Hansen, H.H.; Bertrand, C.; Lambion, J.; Finckh, M.; Schüler, C.; Lammerts van Bueren, E.; Ruissen, T.; Solberg, S.; Speiser, B.; S., Philip; M., Wolfe; Leifert, C.

In order to assess the risk of the use of recycled phosphorus (P) fertilisers for organic farming, the potential accumulation of heavy metals in soil after a 200-year fertilizer application equivalent to 11 kg P ha-1 yr-1 was calculated in a mass balance approach. Both fertilizers currently allowed in organic farming and recycled P fertilizers were regarded. For heavy metals, four scenarios with two soil pH levels (pH 5 and pH 7) and two precipitation excess levels (F 0.1 and F 0.3 m yr-1) were calculated. Recycled P fertilizers like struvite, meat- and bone meal, ashes, sewage sludge and digestate, as well as phosphate rock and triple superphosphate had a higher P content and a lower heavy metal-to-P ratio than composts. Consequently, compost application...

Abschätzung des Rückstandsverhaltens von NeemAzal-T/S aus Analysen der Leitsubstanz Azadirachtin A Organic Eprints
Ruch, Beate; Kleeberg, Hubertus.

Fricke, Thomas; Wachendorf, Michael.
To describe spatial heterogeneity of crop properties, non-destructive methods can be helpful in capturing whole field data sets. This paper shows examples of different sensor methods that have been evaluated to measure biomass and legume content in legume-grass mixtures. Biomass has been estimated using vegetation indices (NDVI, SR, EVI and REIP) calculated from spectral reflectance measurements in greenhouse experiments. The index REIP has been used to identify species composition as well. Furthermore, biomass values can be derived from ultra sonic measurements of sward heights. To quantify legume contents in short term leys, which is important for forage quality and nitrogen flows, image analysis tools have been used in different experi-ments with good...

Abundance of naturally occurring entomopathogenic nematodes and establishment of inoculated Steinernema feltiae in an organic cropping system Organic Eprints
Nielsen, Otto; Philipsen, Holger.
The abundance of entomopathogenic nematodes and soil dwelling stages of plant specific insects was studied in an organic cropping system for two years. In addition was the survival of an inoculated strain of Steinernema feltiae studied. The abundance of naturally occurring entomopathogenic nematodes was in general at a low level throughout the observation period (0-26 % positive samples). Inoculated S. feltiae established well when pea was grown in the same or in the following year whereas the nematodes were less able or unable to establish in the other crops (cabbage, carrots, barley, alfalfa/clover). The successful establishment of nematodes, and the abundance in general, correlated well with the presence of plant specific insects.

Abundanz von Getreideaphiden im Winterweizen in Abhängigkeit von Bewirtschaftunggssystemen mit unterschiedlicher Stickstoff-Intensität Organic Eprints
Lohaus, Katharina; Vidal, Stefan.
The reorganisation from conventional to organic farming practice on a farm located in Northern Germany was accompanied in a long term monitoring to survey the abun-dances of cereal aphids and their natural enemies in winter wheat. The research project focuses on the interactions of host plant and aphids in ecological crop rotation systems differing in their amount of legumes (nitrogen intensive, nitrogen extensive system). Additionally manure treated winter wheat plots established in both ecological crop rota-tion systems were investigated. For comparison the abundance of aphids in conventional farming systems with winter wheat fields nearby were also monitored. The results indi-cate that within the triannual investigation period, aphids significantly...

Abwehr von Wühlmausschäden im ökologischen Obstbau mit Hilfe von Migrationsbarrieren Organic Eprints
Walther, B.; Pelz, H.-J..

Acceleration of Developments for tomorrow's Organic markets Organic Eprints
Ertem, A.; Menon, M.K.; Bernet, T..
The global Organic market for food has expanded to upwards of US$ 60 billion in consumer purchases annually. However, the market is concentrated in only a few countries, mostly in Europe and North America, and the global market share is far below 1%. We need further developments if the aspirations of the Organic World to provide solutions to global challenges are to be realized. The market and the attractiveness of Organic products on the market are changing, so that we need to adapt. The positioning of Organic products in the various markets, the responses of the Organic Sector to upcoming concerns, the transparency of processes and products, and the reporting of impacts are issues to which marketers need to be up to date.

Acceptance and Motivational Impact of the Organic Certification System Organic Eprints
Schulze, Holger; Jahn, G.; Spiller, Achim.
In recent years the institutional framework of the organic certification system has step by step become a more formal and state run system. Our research shows that al-though the majority of the farmers accept the system, they are not convinced of its cost-benefit relationship. Farmers prefer a more association- and advice-oriented control of the organic certification process.

Acceptance of the most common quality attributes of organic food in the Finnish food chain Organic Eprints
Nuutila, Jaakko.
The aim of this study was to establish the degree of the acceptance of organic food production and food in the Finnish food chain. The organic food system in Finland is poorly developed and one of the many reasons is that the food chain stakeholders are not committed and do not share common objectives for organic food and its production. A survey was carried among 1527 respondents from agriculture, industry, retail, catering and consumers to establish their opinions on safety and healthiness of organic food, and ecology and ethicality of organic production as well as the support that their own environment provided to their opinions. The results show that all environments are very positive for all four attributes. The best support for positive opinions on...

Accessing the World Market for Organic Food and Beverages from Nigeria Organic Eprints
Olabiyi, T.I.; Okusanya, A.O.; Harris, P.J.C..
A study in 2005-2006 assessed the opportunities for and constraints to Nigeria accessing the international organic market. The study comprised semi-structured interviews with agricultural produce exporters and government officials in Nigeria, and with representatives of certification agencies in the UK, and focus group discussions with farmers’ groups in Ogun State, Nigeria. Fresh and canned pineapple and mango, ginger, and herbs and spices were ranked as having very high potential for Nigeria in the international market. Fruit juice concentrates, palm oil, cashew nuts, honey and cotton were among those products classified as high potential. Constraints identified included lack of awareness of organic farming techniques, high certification costs, lack of...

Accumulation of Dioxins and PCB in House Fly larvae (Musca domestica) reared in poultry manure and used in feed for organic laying hens Organic Eprints
Nordentoft, Steen; Cederberg, Tommy Licht; Fischer, Christian Holst; Bjerrum, Lotte.
Eggs from free range hens have frequently higher content of dioxins and PCB. As recycling manure may concentrate contaminants in the larvae, we tested whether larvae reared in poultry manure accumulated dioxins and PCB, and if feeding laying hens with these larvae would increase the levels of dioxins and PCB in the hen eggs.

Accuracy of 54K to HD gebotype imputation in Brown Swiss cattle Organic Eprints
Gredler, B.; Sargolzaei, M.; Bapst, B.; Bieber, A.; Simianer, H.; Seefried, F.R..
Imputation of genotypes can be used to reduce the implementation costs of genomic selection. In this study, we evaluated the accuracy of genotype imputation from Illumina 54k to Illumina High Density (HD) in Brown Swiss cattle. Genotype data comprised 6,106 54k and 880 HD genotyped bulls and cows of Brown Swiss and Original Braunvieh cattle. Genotype data was checked for parentage conflicts and SNP were excluded if MAF was below 0.5% and SNP call rate was lower than 90%. The final data set included 39,004 SNP for the 54k and 627,306 SNP for the HD chip. HD genotypes of animals born between 2004 and 2008 (n=365) were masked to mimic animals genotyped with the 54k chip. Methods used for imputation were FImpute and Findhap V2. Both programs use pedigree...

Ackerbohnenschrot im Vergleich zu Rottemist: Effekte auf Ertrag und Qualitätsparameter von Kartoffeln Organic Eprints
Oltmanns, Meike; Raupp, Joachim.
